SAM - A LIFE OF SERVICE TO GOD AND COUNTRY

Introduce yourselves. One by one. Where are you from? I ask. What does your mother do? Your father? Why did you choose to study law? My new graduate law students respond, a little puzzled. I can see that they do not understand why I ask these questions. They are in a hurry to get into the nitty-gritty if learning about the legal profession and here is this old lawyer asking questions that have no relevance to matters at hand. When they settle down and answer, I discover students with accomplished parents; lawyers, doctors, engineers and other equally important professions. The children of farmers, carpenters, market women are also in the same classroom. Soon they will all be donning black gowns, off-white wigs and calling themselves learned friends. Who has done better, the young man whose father is a lawyer or the young woman whose single mother has never stepped foot in a classroom? Whose journey has been a gladiator's task? Never look down on anybody and take the time to know people, I say to my students; for one can spend years in a classroom with others and like ships gliding past in the night, not have the opportunity to get to know one another. It is a glorious victory when an individual "journeys" far to achieve their dreams. I have travelled far.
